Gerwurztraminer

Gerwurztraminer

2021 Gewürztraminer

Orange, New South Wales

An aromatic nose of rosewater, lychees and ginger. The palate is focussed around intense fruit. There’s mealy texture and mouthfeel, driven by a sherberty acid structure.

From $26.10 per bottle

Medium to full yellow colour with a tint of green, not 100% filter-bright, the aromas complex and showing the beginnings of bottle development, as well as restrained gewürz varietal spice. The wine is full, soft textured, rounded and dry on the tongue, with a trace of cashew nut and a very dry, very long finish that has a subtly-handled trace of tannin grip. There is richness, weight and authority here. Long finish. Top value.

Upfront aromas of rosewater, Turkish delight, lychees and musk set the taste buds tingling in anticipation. The palate offers a delicate balance of crisp acid and perceived sweetness. The lees contact component adds a savoury finish, aided and abetted by the 12.8% Alc/Vol afterglow. It's an enjoyable and refreshing cool climate GT crafted by winemaker Will Rikard-Bell 93/100 points ($29)

The first stop on my Orange adventure took me to the Slow Wine Co cellar door. A beautiful building in the historic town of Millthorpe, this was a great starting point. Gewurztraminer is always an aromatic wine but this release was not overly expensive. Expected Turkish Delight, white flowers and scents of cut pear make a neat introduction. The palate is filled out by white fleshed stone fruit with lychees cutting a neat groove. An enjoyable wine that needs food by its side - think Malaysian or Thai.
